Mihailo Petrovic was born in Belgrade, Serbia on February 2, 1894. He attended the University of Vienna for three years before leaving to study at Harvard University. Prior to World War I he worked as an editor for the Harvard Crimson, but upon the outbreak of war, he enlisted in the Serbian Army. He was wounded in battle and spent the remainder of the war as a prisoner of war
After the war he returned to his studies at Harvard, earning his Ph.D. in 1920. He then turned to teaching and earned his first appointment at Princeton University in 1925.
He remained there until 1940, when he accepted an invitation to become the first Director of Research at The Franklin Institute of Science and Education (now known as The Franklin Institute).
